The architect, Josef Danda, was born in Koleč in Central Bohemia in 1906, the same year as the devastating San Francisco earthquake. He became one of the most significant Czech architects of the country’s Modern railway system. He studied at Prague’s Technical University and as a young man briefly ‘worked’ in Corbusier’s studio at 35 Rue de Sèvres in Paris. Often young architects worked in his studio unsalaried. That being said many young Czechs beat the path to Paris and equally Corbusier is said to have been fascinated by Czech Functionalism, visiting the country in 1928 (supposedly he was disappointed not to have designed for Bata shoe company in Zlin).

Today several of Josef Danda’s stations are listed and considered national treasures. This is Nádraži Klatovy (Klatovy Railway Station).

Built in 1938 as a family home for Lefkios and Ypatia Zenonos, the house was designed by architect Benjamin Ginzburg. It remained in private ownership until the 1980s, when the Zenonos family donated it to the state. Today, beautifully restored, it serves as the Limassol Municipal Art Gallery.

During the interwar years, Cyprus enthusiastically embraced modernism, with its architecture influenced by the Bauhaus movement and the work of Erich Mendelsohn.

The identity of Ginzburg (or Gindsburg/Günsberg) remains something of a mystery. He is often described as a “German-Jewish” architect, but could it be that Civil Engineer Benzion Ginsburg are one and the same? Benzion was born in 1898 in Rishon LeZion, then part of the Ottoman Empire, and later studied architecture at the Technikum in Zurich. He collaborated with architect Sam Barkai in the building of the Forest Park hotel in Platres.

Regardless of his origins, Ginzburg left a lasting mark on Cyprus, designing several significant buildings, including the Limassol Rialto Theatre (1932) and the Ledra Palace Hotel.
