A stunning modernist house designed by Robert Mallet-Stevens with a cubist garden by Gabriel Guevrekian. Located in Hyères in Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur.
Designed for Marie Laure and Charles de Noailles, the house became the perfect showcase for emerging modernist stars. Filled with magical interior and exterior spaces such as the Salon Rose with its beautiful stained glass ceiling and skylight by Louis Barillet. Man Ray, a frequent visitor, was actively encouraged and financed by the de Noailles and made a film about the villa, Les Mystères du Château de Dé.
He said of his hostess,
‘to the Viscountess of Noailles, I dedicate these pictures which can never reveal the extend of her kindness and charm’
Another visitor was Jean Cocteau, a childhood friend of Marie Laure – he wrote and mused about his time spent with her.
Described as protectors of the arts the couple were iconic in their lifetime and beyond.
