Niemeyer Brasilia

Cathedral of Brasilia

The Metropolitan Cathedral of our Lady of Aparecida which is also known as the Metropolitana Nossa Senhora Aparecida is located on the Esplanade of the Ministries. It was designed by Brazillian architect Oscar Niemeyer together with engineer Lucio Costa.  After many hitches, its 1958 plan was finally inaugurated in 1973. The design is a hyperboloid and looks like a crown. It has sixteen columns each of which weighs 90 tons, magnificent stained glass windows and is home to four huge bronze statues by Dante Croce.
